About Phimeanakas

Phimeanakas is a Hindu-Buddhist temple located in the ancient city of Angkor, Cambodia. It is believed to have been built during the reign of King Rajendravarman II in the late 10th century, making it one of the oldest temples in the Angkor complex.

Phimeanakas is known for its distinctive architectural style, which incorporates elements of both Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. The temple's central tower rises high above the surrounding structures, and its many levels are adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures.

One of the most interesting legends associated with Phimeanakas is the tale of the "Celestial Palace," which states that the king would ascend the tower each night to meet with a beautiful woman who lived at the top. Some versions of the story say that the woman was a celestial being, while others suggest that she was a representation of the Hindu goddess Vishnu. Regardless of the true origin of the story, Phimeanakas remains an important cultural and religious site, and its grand tower and intricate carvings continue to inspire awe in visitors today.

Overall, Phimeanakas is a fascinating and important temple in the Angkor complex, offering a glimpse into the rich religious and cultural heritage of ancient Cambodia.

Phimeanakas means "heavenly palace".

Pagoda to Angkor Thom Royal Palace

The photo on the right is the east tower gate, which is the main gate to enter the grounds of the royal palace. On the premises, there are small facilities such as Phimeanakas, as well as ponds called Oike and Meike. By the way, since the royal palace itself was made of wood, there is almost nothing left except the scattered roof tiles.

When Phimeanakas was first built on the grounds of the royal palace, it seems that it was used as a place for royal ceremonies. Others were not allowed near. It is natural to say that it is natural because it is on the premises of the royal palace.

Phimeanakas is a small pyramidal temple with steep steps. The pyramid is a symbol of Mount Sumeru. Three layers of laterite foundations are piled up. You can climb to the top platform with the central tower. However, it's not very high, so you won't get as much of a view as the nearby Baphuong.

Phimeanakas is located in Angkor Thom, so it gets quite a few visitors. It is an impression that there is not much to see as relics.
