Neak Poan

Overview

Neak Poan is a temple in the Angkor Wat temple complex in Cambodia, near the Preah Khan temple. It is considered one of the smaller temples in the complex, but is known for its unique design and religious significance.

This temple is located in a square pool and consists of a central tower surrounded by four smaller towers at each corner. The temple is believed to have been used for rituals related to the Hindu god of creation, Brahma. It was also used for purification ceremonies, as the pool was thought to have healing properties.

The central tower represents the central mountain of the Hindu cosmology. Other four surrounding towers may symbolize the continents surrounding it. The temple is also decorated with carvings and sculptures depicting Hindu gods and scenes from Hindu mythology.

Today, Neak Poan is a popular tourist attraction and is considered one of the most well-preserved temples in the Angkor Wat complex. Visitors to the temple can admire its unique design and learn about the religious and cultural significance of the temple and the larger Angkor Wat complex.

Neak Poan has a large square pond in the center with small square ponds attached to the four sides, and the central platform has an unusual circular shape. A statue of the divine horse Varaha stands near the center of the pond. However, since this is also not possible to approach, it can only be seen to the extent that “that is so”. The left side of the photo below is the statue of the divine horse Varaha, and the central shrine of Nyak Poan can be seen slightly on the right side.

To get to Neak Poan, leave the road and walk along a long wooden path built over the water. The boardwalk is well maintained, but it is a bit difficult to pass by a large group. Neak Poan is a small but beautiful ruin of an unusual structure.
